The Routledge Companion to C. S. Lewis

Call for Proposals

Marybeth and David Baggett (Houston Christian University) are currently soliciting chapters for The Routledge Companion to C. S. Lewis, which is under contract and in process. The volume will consist of thirty or so chapters of roughly 8,000 words each. Together these entries will explore the breadth and depth of Lewis’s literary, apologetic, and scholarly work and grapple with his continued relevance.

The integrating motif for this collection is the interchange between literature and philosophy that animates Lewis’s entire body of work. Individual contributors will have the freedom to explore that theme in whatever way best serves their specific topics. A more detailed outline of the project is available on request.

Tentative sections and topics include, but are not limited to, the following: Lewis’s Intellectual and Creative Development (Lewis’s Early Years, Lewis in Wartime, Lewis at Oxford, Lewis’s Library, Lewis and Joy, Lewis at Cambridge); Lewis’s Philosophical Imagination (Juvenilia, Till We Have Faces and The Four Loves, Narnia Chronicles, Ransom Trilogy, Screwtape Letters, Lewis’s Poetry); Lewis as Literary Apologist (Lewis the Philosopher, Miracles, the Moral Argument, Trilemma, Argument from Reason); Lewis as Interdisciplinary Academic (Preface to Paradise Lost, The Discarded Image, Allegory of Love, Pilgrim’s Regress, English Literature in the Sixteenth Century, Experiment in Criticism, Abolition of Man); Lewis’s Kaleidoscopic Legacy (Lewis & Postmodernism, Lewis & the Problem of Evil, Lewis & the Church, Lewis & Collaboration)
